Been a busy 9 days! Feels like longer. Update notes are as follows:
Player:
- You can randomize your player colours in the menu (still no save/load system, will not persist after relaunching).
- Player pathfinding has been overhauled again. Player now calculates the best path towards the target and moves towards it like normal, but follows the direction of the path instead of facing the target the entire time. Looks more natural. Also allows for better live-updating of collisions. This currently causes some issues (see "Known Bugs") but is for the best.
NPCs:
- NPCs will still shout at you if you get too close to them, but sometimes they might be nice about it. 💬 I've tightened the range a bit more, would love feedback. ☝ I want to implement a mood system, where NPCs can be friendly/neutral/grumpy and it can randomly change throughout the day.
- At night time, NPCs will either choose to go to an idling point (NPCs under 18 will head to a "safe" point) or attempt to leave the map.
- On death, NPCs will simply disappear. 💭 Still unsure what I want to do with this. Perhaps they might also attempt to leave the map instead?
- NPC pathfinding has been overhauled again (see "Player pathfinding has been overhauled again", it has the same explanation).
Vehicles:
- 💬Would still feedback on vehicle speeds, cars and bikes.
- ☝ I still want to change the vehicle behaviour so that they actually make a brief (second?) stop before a crossing. This may require a larger vehicle behaviour overhaul.
- ☝ I still want to add lights to the vehicles at night.
- Added another bike lane! Crossings and vehicle behaviour has been adjusted to match.
- Added a bike object with two routes! It spawns a random NPC on top. ☝ Currently bike riders don't yell if you get too close, though I'd like to change that.
Objects/Buildings:
- Doors have been removed. I changed the collision detection system and therefore need to rethink how I approach doors.
- Previous point aside, buildings are still closed off via road cones and construction signs.
- NPCs and Player should now attempt to avoid road cones and signs.
- Added fishing spot.
- Adjusted layout of jail, hospital and city hall.
- Laid foundation for clothing store.
- Readjusted where some lampposts are. 💬 Would still like feedback on placements? ☝ Also still want to implement them glowing at night.
Look & Design:
- Menu buttons are all on screen but only "Continue" currently functions. ☝ Perhaps I gray-out disabled buttons?
- Added some flower particles that blow around in the wind. ☝ Hoping to implement this into a weather system, add some randomness.
- Adjusted some fonts.
- Title now wobbles in menu.
Behind The Scenes:
- Days are 15 minutes long, nights are 5 minutes long. As it should be.
- You can no longer see collisions in debug mode, I will add this back eventually. Got removed when I changed collision detection method.
- Started working on a heatwave effect, to add to the eventual weather system. Again, like the clouds from last version, hidden in this release but the foundation is there.
- You can screenshot on Windows with F12. 🐛 Night time lighting SHOULD now show up in screenshots💭 Screenshots SHOULD save to your chosen game directory on Windows. Currently no in-game way to take screenshots on Android, you will have to take one natively according to your device.
- More debug info is available for Player radius + pathfinding, NPC info + pathfinding, vehicle info + pathfinding. Player moves faster in debug mode.
Known Bugs:
- If Player (or NPC) can't calculate pathfinding to their target co-ords, they will continue moving in the direction they were going, ignoring anything in their path, until they can recalculate a working path to follow. This means you (or an NPC) may phase through walls or other collisions.
Next Steps:
- I want to overhaul the vehicle system. Maybe actually give them some pathfinding capabilities and route randomness.
- I want a working menu, at least have the buttons all do something (even if it's just open an empty box).
- I want to have a weather system in place, even if it's not complete.
- I want to add player customization, even if it doesn't save for future games.
- Fix the collision system so Players/NPCs won't attempt to move if they cannot complete a path.
- I want a lighting system, especially for night time. Cars, bikes, bus and lampposts.
- Let's add some music or sfx, this game is a bit quiet.
